S.E.Choeze Kuchen Rinpoche - Phowa Retreat

Phowa is a practice taught in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism and is one of the Six Doctrines of Naropa. It is a profound method to transfer consciousness to a liberated state at the time of death. This method is considered a quick and effective way to achieve liberation for the benefit of all beings. During the practice, a crucial part of the visualization is the the transference of consciousness from the body through the crown of the head. The practice also brings benefits during our lifetime in that it stabilizes the consciousness and strengthens the motivation for Dharma practice.

Marpa the translator reported that the practice of Phowa had freed him from any fear of death. The Phowa of the Drikung Kagyu lineage is known to be particularly effective and is traditionally transmitted in Tibet in a grand ceremony every twelve years.
Over the last few decades, H.E. Ayang Rinpoche, a well-known master of the Drikung tradition, taught this practice and held large courses on it worldwide. H.E. Kuchen Rinpoche is now continuing this tradition.
